Certified Retina Technician (CRT) Exam FAQs

The bottom line: If you work for a retina specialist, you are eligible to take the CRT exam if you are:
1) certified (COA, COT, COMT) and you have at least 6 months experience working with a retina specialist
-or-
2) you have at least 2 years experience working with a retina specialist and you have 5 hours of retina related CE credits within 12 months prior to submitting your application. No prior certification required.

What is the CRT certification?
The Certified Retina Technician (CRT) designation has been created by JCAHPO and it "offers a retina specific credential that signifies knowledge in the retina field."
How do I know if I am eligible?
To be eligible, candidates must meet one of the three following education and work experience categories:
1 Training Program Graduate: check the jcahpo.org website for training programs.
2. Work experience and current certification: Employed 1000 hours (approx. 6 months) in a retina practice and core certified as a COA, COT, or COMT.
3. Continuing education and work experience: Employed 4000 hours (approx. 2 years) in a retina practice with 5 hours of retina related CE credits within 12 months prior to submitting application.
What are the exam requirements?
Pass a 110 question multiple choice exam. There is no skill evaluation.
What are the advantages of using the eyetec.net CRT Exam Prep Course?
1. Our CRT exam prep course is included with our COT Exam Prep Course and our COMT Exam Prep Course.
2. The CRT exam content areas are a subset of the COT exam content areas. Therefore, when you study for a COA, COT, or COMT certification with an eyetec.net prep course, you are also automatically studying for the CRT exam. Our CRT exam prep course organizes the CRT exam content for you to make it easy for you to review prior to taking the CRT exam. The eyetec.net prep course also provides exam practice tests for the CRT exam.

You can study for the COA exam and the CRT exam at the same time with one eyetec.net exam prep course:
You will need to purchase the eyetec.net COT Exam Prep Course, which includes the CRT Exam Prep Course and the COA Exam Prep Course. The COT prep course is only slightly more expensive than the COA prep course and it gives you 3 more months of access (9 months, vs 6 months). The advantage of the COT exam prep course is that you will be studying the same material and you will be prepared to take two certification exams (COA and CRT). If you have already purchased the COA exam prep course, you can convert to the COT exam prep course by paying the difference in the course fees. Once you pass the COA certification exam, you will be eligible to take the CRT exam, or you can take the CRT exam without prior certification if you have at least 2 years experience working with a retina specialist.
